Obituary
Mildred Drake of Monroe, died unexpectedly on November 18, 2017, at the age of 90. Mrs. Drake was awaiting discharge at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center when she suffered a major heart attack.

She was born on March 18, 1927, in Henry County, GA to Benjamin P. Trantham and Lonie Chumbley Trantham. Mildred graduated from Monroe Area High School in 1944. She was also a graduate of the Massey Business School. On March 17, 1945, she married I. R. Drake. The couple celebrated their 71st Wedding Anniversary prior to Mr. Drake's death in 2016.

Mildred worked for Chamberlain Manufacturing in Monroe, retiring after 25 years of service. She then was a volunteer with the Womens Auxiliary at the Walton Medical Center for 23 years where she was involved with the Beehive Gift Shop. The Drakes both loved children. For several years, they served as foster parents to several different children.

Mrs. Drake was a dedicated church worker throughout her adult life. She was an active member of First Christian Church, Monroe for more than 50 years. The past several years she has been an active member of Harmony Baptist Church in Walton County. Mildred was a skilled seamstress. But, her great joy was cooking. She was well known for her cooking skills and especially for her caramel cakes.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and several siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Janice Mace (Alan) of Athens; her granddaughter Anne-Marie Mankin (Kevin) of Earlham, IA; three grandsons, Justin of Denver, CO, Cory of Omaha, NE, and Matthew of Omaha, NE; as well as two brothers, Lawrence Trantham (Suzie) of Prattville, AL, and Troy Trantham of Monroe, and two sisters, Ruth Brewer of Monroe and Shirley Titshaw of Walnut Grove, GA, as well as several nieces and nephews and many friends. Two of her foster children maintained a significant relationship with Mrs. Drake: Christina Shipman of Tullahoma, TN, and John Evans of Monroe. Throughout her life, Mildred loved each of the children as her own.

Visitation will be Saturday, November 25, 2017, at 9:30 am to 11:00 am at the Meadows Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 to be followed by burial at Westlawn Memorial Park. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, consideration be given to donating a memorial in Mrs. Drake's name to the Cancer Foundation of Northeast Georgia, P.O. Box 49309, Athens, GA 30604.
