OBITUARY

John Harry Brown, Jr., age 94 of Monroe, passed away at his home on October 2, 2024. He was born on July 16, 1930 in Walton County to Sally Thomas Brown and to John Harry Brown, Sr. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Peggy Brown Hudson.


Surviving are his wife and soul mate of 70 years, Barbara Kilgore Brown; daughter and son in law, Donna and Mark Sisk; son, John Alan Brown; 3 grandchildren, Wesley Brown Sisk and Maghan, John Taylor Sisk and JoAnna, William Chase Sisk and Lauren; 3 great grandchildren, Abigail, Andi, and Hudson Sisk.


Harry joined First Baptist Church Monroe when he was 12 years old. Until his death, he had been the longest living member of the church.


Harry graduated from Monroe High School in 1947 and attended The University of Georgia. He served in the National Guard from 1948 until 1964, achieving the status of Master Sergeant and Senior Training Instructor of the U.S. Army Medical Corp. Harry also drove a bus for Walton County Schools in the late 50's and early 60's.


He started his career in the gasoline industry at an early age with his father. In the early 60's, he started his own business which later grew into an oil and gasoline distributorship, Brown Oil Company.


Harry was a member of the Georgia Oilmen's Association, serving as the Chairman of the Board in the year 2000. He also served on the Board of Directors at The Farmers Bank and Wachovia Bank in Monroe.


Harry left an amazing legacy for his family and some very big shoes to be filled as a businessman. Many of his associates have called him a local historian as he could tell some amazing stories about his community.


Visitation will be held on Sunday October 6th at 2 pm in the fellowship hall at First Baptist Church Monroe. Service to follow at 4:00 PM in the sanctuary with Dr. Todd Ware officiating. Interment will follow at Westlawn Cemetery.


Flowers will be accepted at Meadows Funeral Home or in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church Monroe or to George Walton Academy in memory of John Harry Brown Jr. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
