OBITUARY

Robert “Lamar” Palmer passed away quietly at home surrounded by family on September 9, 2025. He was 91 years old. Born in Good Hope, Georgia, on December 24, 1933, Lamar grew up working the land on his family’s farm. He attended school at Good Hope High School, and after the 10th grade, he headed to Texas to join the United States Air Force. As an airman, he served four years which included time in Korea during the war. When his father became ill, Lamar returned home to Georgia to help his family, where he met and married the love of his life and mother of his children, Martha “Jo” Matthews, who predeceased him in 2021 after more than six decades of marriage.

Many knew Lamar simply as “Sheriff,” a title he carried with honor and dignity. His distinguished career in law enforcement began in 1964 when he joined the City of Monroe Police Department as an officer, where through hard work and dedication he rose to the rank of Captain. After ten years of service with the city, he transitioned to the Walton County Sheriff’s Department, serving as Major before ultimately being elected Sheriff—a role he faithfully held until his retirement in 2000. Even after retiring from law enforcement, Lamar continued his commitment to public service as a Walton County Commissioner for 12 years. In total, Lamar devoted 50 years to public service with steadfast dedication and integrity.

Sheriff Palmer was honored to serve his country and community, but his greatest pride was his family. He leaves behind a son, Ricky Palmer (Kathy), and a daughter, Lisa Palmer Stribling (Robert); grandchildren Jason Palmer, Hannah Beesley, Jacob Palmer, Katie Barton, Hunter Leachmon, MaCall Brooks, Jennifer Mosley, Sam Sibling, and Emily Stribling; and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Harold, and predeceased by brother W. D. Palmer.

Lamar has finished his race and entered into peace, free from pain and suffering, while continuing to watch over his family. He will be deeply missed, yet his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him. Well done, thy good and faithful servant.

Visitation will be held at 1025 Church, 1025 E. Spring Street, Monroe on Friday, September 12 from 6 - 9 PM. and Saturday, September 13 from 10AM - 12PM with funeral services to follow on Saturday at 1:00 PM. Interment will be held at Mt. Vernon Christian Church Cemetery.
