OBITUARY

Margaret B. Cooper, age 91, of Good Hope, Georgia, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on October 17, 2025. After many years of gracefully and courageously facing the many challenges of Alzheimer’s disease, she is now at peace and rejoicing in heaven.

Margaret was born in Carroll County on February 25, 1934. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Bertha Brock, her sister, Sarah Gillespie, her brother, Clarence Brock and her second husband, George Edward Cooper, Jr. She was previously married to Dr. Earl Akery and was known to many during that time as Margaret Akery.

She is survived by her children Steve Akery (Melissa), Rita Millians (Wade), Ronda Matheny (Darrell), and Allen Akery, her stepchildren, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild. To her family and friends, she was lovingly known as “Memaw”.

Margaret was the second woman to receive a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture from the University of Georgia in 1975. Using her education, she taught Agriculture and Horticulture in Gwinnett County for several years. After returning to UGA, she earned a Master’s Degree in Education. As a special education teacher at Loganville Elementary School, she devoted many years to helping students reach their full potential. She also mentored adults working toward their GED.

After retirement, Margaret spent her days sewing, quilting, knitting, and crocheting. She was known for her intricate quilt designs, each one stitched with love. She shared her passion for quilting by teaching many friends and family the craft she loved. Besides being remembered for her beautiful works of art, Margaret will be remembered for her kindness and love for everyone. She never met a stranger and always welcomed everyone with open arms and a smile.

She was devoted to her family as well as to Faith Baptist Church of Monroe, Georgia. At her passing, she was the oldest living charter member of the church, established in 1975.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Faith Baptist Church Building Fund, 1789 Hwy 11 NW, Monroe, GA 30656, or online at www.faithmonroe.com.
