OBITUARY
With hearts full of both sorrow and gratitude, we remember the life of Deborah (Debbie) Mulkey Long, 74, of Monroe, Georgia, who passed away peacefully at home on October 27, 2025. Debbie’s legacy of kindness, faith, and dedication to her family and community will be celebrated at The First Presbyterian Church on Thursday, October 26, 2025. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with a service to follow at 10:30.
Debbie was born in Marietta, Georgia on February 3,1952 to Jane Smith Mulkey and Jess Oliver Mulkey. She would spend most of her childhood in Monroe where she would enjoy school and summers with her friends and family. She graduated from Monroe Area High School in 1969 lettering in cheerleading and basketball. After high school she attended West Georgia College and Kennesaw Junior College (now Kennesaw State University) until marrying Steven Lamar Long (her high school sweetheart) in1971. After Steve and Debbie married she transferred to Clemson University obtaining her BSED in1973 and her Masters in 1975. Debbie started her teaching career in Lumberton, N. C. After two years, Steve and Debbie would move to Columbia, South Carolina. Their next move would be to Georgetown, South Carolina until moving back to Georgia. In 1996, Debbie moved back to Monroe and taught at Carver Middle School until her retirement in 2018 ending her career with 44 years in teaching.
Debbie loved playing golf, swimming and being with family including Buzz her Boykin Spaniel. Most of all pursuing her faith was her top priority and most treasured use of time. She was a member and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Monroe where she led Bible Study and taught Sunday School throughout the years.
Preceding her in death was her mother, father, and husband, two brothers-in-law (Rick O’Kelley and Lee Smith), she is survived by her sisters Nan Mulkey O’Kelley and Kim Mulkey-Smith of Monroe, nephew John (Corinne) Francis of Atlanta and 3 great nephews Niko, Jonas and Sibyl Francis as well as many cousins.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 500 Breedlove Drive, Monroe, Georgia, 30655. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
