Friends & Relatives

I was a student of Miss Kerr in 9th grade at Rockdale County High School. She was my homeroom teacher, as well as my English teacher. One day, as she was handing out test papers from the day before, a couple of my friends and I were talking and cutting up in class and when she got to us she noted that all three of us had failing grades on that test. That didn't set very well with her. We were taken to the Principal's office (next door), and all three of us got a lecture and a paddling. Our grades and behavior improved after that! It's too bad that teachers can't do that anymore. Miss Kerr taught us how to diagram sentences, and that helped me visualize what I couldn't grasp from reading it out of the book. That helped me a lot in years to come. At the end of the school year, I was so disappointed when she announced that she would be getting married during the summer, and teaching the next year at Newton County High School. Several years later, I met and married my wife, who had been in Mrs. Clodfelter's first English class at Newton. We both agreed that she was one of the best teachers we had, and also just a very sweet lady. We were very saddened to find her obituary and wish to extend our sympathy to the family. Miss Kerr was a shining light in my life and I'm sure she was to many others also.
